My name is Avery Windham, and I’m currently studying nursing at The University of Akron. I recently had the opportunity to travel to Germany to help run a soccer camp. Soccer has been a big part of my life. I played all through high school and have spent the past three years coaching at Lake High School (Ohio).
The purpose of this camp (Germany) was not only to coach kids in soccer but also to share how God has worked in our own lives. I loved watching the campers take our stories, messages, and advice and apply them to their own experiences.
One of the most meaningful parts for me was mentoring the young girls at the camp. They were greatly outnumbered by the boys, which made it even more special to connect with each of them on a deeper level. My team had two girls, and it was so rewarding to encourage and coach them throughout the week.
This experience reminded me that I can use my platform as a coach back in the U.S. to spread the Gospel and mentor young athletes. I came away with a deeper understanding of how God works in countless ways when I simply allow Him to move.
